They fell victim to the backlash of Custer’s Last Stand, were massacred at Wounded Knee because of their Ghost Dance, and had the U.S. take their sacred Black Hills away illegally after they would not give it away. Today they live on one of the poorest reservations, Pine Ridge, which has had a large problem with alcoholism. Life expectancy is barely 50 years old for men and women of the Pine Ridge Reservations; truly sad.
